Last tax season, our Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program prepared 3,341 tax returns, returning $4,318,112 in federal and state refunds of much needed revenue to our local communities.
Approximately sixty-nine percent of tax filers received the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) for a total of $1,318,404.
Additionally, PathWays PA tax preparers assisted 2,775 seniors and/or disabled filers to claim the Pennsylvania property tax/rent rebate.
The tax refund represents the single largest cash influx low income families receive over the course of the year. PathWays PA helps filers understand the opportunity the refund provides to build year-round financial stability and self-sufficiency. PathWays PA encourages VITA filers to save a portion of their refund to achieve these and other financial goals. PathWays PA’s tax preparers help filers realize that investing in U.S. Savings Bonds, opening new bank accounts or Individual Development Accounts (IDAs – matched savings accounts for education), or saving the refund on a prepaid debit card can help build their financial assets and stability.
